How MongoDB Is Innovating Campus Recruiting Through Software

Learn how one company used RippleMatch to cut down applicant review time, meet their diversity goals, and more.

In today’s job market, campus recruiting teams are being asked to balance finding ways to effectively engage with Gen Z candidates and meet ambitious diversity hiring goals with tighter budgets and leaner teams — which is no easy feat. However, armed with the right recruiting technology, talent teams can scale their efforts and connect with more candidates across the country, all while being cost-efficient and getting the most out of every effort.

For example, the talent team at MongoDB, a leading modern, general purpose database platform, has found great success in leveraging innovative campus recruiting software to drive its early career strategy.

During a recent webinar we hosted, Maximizing Recruiting Results: MongoDB’s Innovative Approach to Early Identification and Virtual Events, we sat down with Katelyn Peker, the Director of Global Early Talent at MongoDB, to hear exactly how she has used technology to transform her recruitment process. Read on to learn what strategies she has employed with the help of the right tech partner.

Streamlining the applicant review process using the latest technology

Today, many recruiters’ days are defined by manually parsing through hundreds of applications, many of which are coming from unqualified candidates. That can lead to recruiters missing out on great talent interested in working at their companies by not advancing them in the hiring process quickly enough. Plus, if recruiters can’t respond to all applicants due to a high volume of resumes, they risk providing a negative candidate experience, which can harm their employer brand and reputation.

That’s why Katelyn turns to RippleMatch to significantly reduce the time her team spends on reviewing applications to provide a positive experience for all candidates. RippleMatch allows you to focus only on qualified applicants through its automated matching system, and helps you quickly reject those you won’t be moving forward in your hiring process.

“We get over 34,000 applicants a year,” Katelyn explained. “We needed something that would be able to automate as we scaled as a team. RippleMatch cut down our applicant review time by almost 50%.”

By surfacing only your best-fit applicants, RippleMatch allows you to spend your time on what truly matters — hiring the next generation for talent for your organization.

Hosting impactful virtual events to generate diverse candidate lists

One of the best ways to reach more candidates — including expanding the number of traditionally underrepresented candidates you can connect with — is to offer ways for them to connect with you in a virtual environment. However, without the right tools, it can be time-consuming and difficult to host impact events, invite the right candidates to attend, swiftly follow up with them so as to not lose that momentum, and understand the effectiveness of your events. That’s why Katelyn uses RippleMatch’s Event platform to excel in all of those areas — and to engage with a diverse slate of candidates from universities they couldn’t visit in person.

Through the RippleMatch platform, Katelyn explained that MongoDB first begins by creating marketing materials and uploading them into the Events tool, and uses RippleMatch’s diverse candidate pool to source who they want to invite to their events.

“It’s as easy as three clicks of a button [to source candidates and] to invite them to the event. From there, you can track your RSVPs,” she explained.

Using RippleMatch, Katelyn has access to the data she needs to determine the ROI of her events, and noted that MongoDB analyzes that data to identify patterns, trends, and areas for improvement. This information enables them to make more informed decisions about which events to host, how to target their audience, and which topics to cover. For instance, MongoDB uses data to determine the optimal time and day to host their events, ensuring maximum attendance. They also use data to identify which events are most successful in attracting top talent and converting them into applicants.

Boosting their Early ID strategy with the support of software

One way to build a strong pipeline of talent for your organization is to connect with students before they are actively looking for jobs, such as college freshmen and sophomores. But that can be a challenge if your company isn’t a well-known name, and you aren’t able to visit so many campuses.

Using RippleMatch tools, Katelyn’s team created  a unique way to interact and engage with students early in their college careers. To build a strong pipeline of talent for MongoDB’s internship program, Katelyn uses RippleMatch’s Events and Sort tools to establish what she referred to as her ‘Early ID Summit’. MongoDB’s Early ID Summit is a one-day, innovative, virtual event to help college sophomores learn about the culture at MongoDB that includes skill-building, engagement with the company’s employee resource groups, and hearing from former interns talk about their experience with the company. Participants also then fast-tracked to an interview for the internship program.

“We’re really using all aspects of RippleMatch to help make it successful,” Katelyn said. “We were able to do that because we use the Event tool within RippleMatch to promote the summit, and use the Source tool to get candidates excited.”

Katelyn explained that they filled 15 internship roles from this program last year, and they went into the fall having already filled a significant portion of their internship class. Plus, many of the interns who came from the summit identified with one or underrepresented group, which allowed MongoDB to host a more diverse class of interns.

“That was the win-win — we got candidates early [and] we had a great diversity pipeline,” Katelyn said.

MongoDB’s innovative approach to recruitment, from streamlining applicant review to Early ID and virtual events, offers valuable insights for organizations looking to maximize their recruiting results. By leveraging the right technology, MongoDB was able to build a strong employer brand, reach a more diverse slate of candidates, foster long-term relationships with potential candidates, and utilize data-driven strategies. By applying these actionable tips from MongoDB’s successful recruitment strategy, your organization can adapt to the changing recruitment landscape and stay ahead of the competition.
